Waking

I've been lying here this way for days since the latest apocalyptic massacre and catastrophe hit. Blinking like a nautilus that has just grown out its eyes. Catching a glimpse of the emptiness, a distant cloud of smoke moving through it. No other living creature around, only the barren trees and the rock-hard ground. A memory looms over my heart, a smile..

I imagine a crowd of zombies past the horizon, maybe even closer. I might go back to sleep for just a little longer. It might be easier if I were to become a zombie myself. Accepting their cruel rules, living among them merrily but... what's the antonym of the word flash?..

..Shadow perhaps. The shadow in a smile. This is what I hold on to, like grannies stroking old photographs with crooked fingers. I smell an old winter garden, in it a lantern with the oil set beside it and a preserved animal, which used to be a sloth or a monkey perhaps.  Maybe I will get going after all when dawn breaks. Until then I turn the music up in this memory-kitchen. I suddenly sense the direction I need to take.
